A QuikScat/SeaWinds Sigma-0 Browse Product
نویسنده
چکیده
Following up on the successful NSCAT mission, the QuikScat/SeaWinds scatterometer (Qscat) provides normalized radar cross section ( o) measurements of the Earth's surface at unprecedented coverage and resolution. While originally designed for wind observation, scatterometers have proven useful in a variety of land and ice studies. To aid in the selection of regions and time periods for study, a global o browse product is produced by Brigham Young University. This product consists of spatial and temporal averages of Qscat L1B o values over a one-day period. This report brie y describes this o browse product.

Improved Hurricane Wind Speed Algorithm for the SeaWinds Satellite Scatterometer
Abszracl-Satellite microwave scatterometer wind retrievals, given in the standard product (e.g., QuikSCAT LZB), badly underestimate the peak wind speed in tropical cyclones. One important reason is that the effects of precipitation on the normalized radar cross section sigma-0 are neglected in the processing algorithms. This paper presents results of a first attempt to provide sigma-0 correctio...

Validation of QuikSCAT Radiometer Rain Rates using the TRMM Microwave Radiometer
The primary mission of the SeaWinds scatterometer on the QuikSCAT satellite is to infer surface wind vector from ocean backscatter measurements. Occasionally the backscatter measurements are contaminated by the presence of rain; therefore a reliable method of identifying rain is needed. Fortunately, the SeaWinds scatterometer simultaneously obtains active (scattering) and passive (emission) mea...

Development of a SeaWinds Wind Product for Weather Forecasting
SeaWinds data are provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at 25-km resolution, whereas most numerical weather prediction (NWP) models use observations at least a 100-km density. We have developed a QuikSCAT wind product at a coarser resolution than the JPL product in order to achieve a more appropriate information content for assimilation in NWP models. This product includes quality con...
